The Terror of Public Speaking
You may know the feeling. Your knees buckle. Your hands shake. Your voice shakes even more. You start sweating.
The title of this post used to describe me. I was horribly frightened when speaking in front of any groups larger than…zero. My first “public speech” was when I was 12 years old and I was asked to give a 2 minute talk in church. I thought I would die! Now I enjoy it. There is nothing like captivating a room full of 5,000 people. Conversely, there’s nothing worse than bombing in front of any size group.
Having been host and executive producer of a TV show for the past seven years I am now very often asked to speak for a variety of groups ranging from church groups, to school assemblies to corporate retreats.
Any speaking I have done has been unsolicited. I have been so busy with my show that speaking is not something I have been able to take much time with aside from speaking when asked.
It is always an honor to be asked to speak and I’d love to do it more. So now is the first time I will actively solicit speaking opportunities. There is tremendous value in the spoken word. I’d be delighted to speak for your group about the power of story. Story shapes who we are. Who we are as individuals is the result of all the stories we have heard, told and even many stories we haven’t heard.
Public speaking is an art. I have changed from being a young boy terrified of speaking to anyone, to someone who enjoys the opportunity to make an impact on an audience no matter what the size. My television show reaches 82 million households. Sometimes I’ll speak to thousands of people at a time. But I prove one story at a time that every human being who walks the planet has a story to tell. It is the individual that matters and will make a difference in the world.
